Good listening and coaching skills can make a real difference to the quality of workplace conversations. This half-day course helps participants develop practical skills to listen more deeply, ask better questions, and support others to reflect, learn and identify their own next steps.

The course introduces a coaching approach to conversations, helping participants move away from immediately giving advice or trying to fix the problem. Instead, they will explore how to create space for others to think, build confidence, and take ownership of their actions.

Participants will have the opportunity to practise key listening and coaching techniques that can be used in everyday conversations with colleagues, team members, clients or volunteers.

This course explores:

  • The difference between listening, advising and coaching

  • How to create a safe and supportive conversation

  • Active listening and attending skills

  • Asking open, curious and helpful questions

  • Using silence, reflection and summarising effectively

  • Helping others explore options and identify next steps

  • Recognising when coaching is appropriate, and when it is not

  • Building confidence in using coaching skills in everyday workplace conversations
